Remembering Charu Mazumdar Before the Fifth Party Congress

Similarly it rests on us to ensure that the centrality which CM accorded to revolutionary peasant movement in the overall project of Indian revolution is continued. But this is not as simple as before, because we have greatly diversified our work and also because agrarian relations in India have changed a lot. A new Agrarian Programme is therefore required. This we are going to adopt in the coming Party Congress along with a naw version of the General Programme and the Political-Organisational Report which would provide an overall political perspective to our tasks on the peasant front and chart out our general course of advance.

Thirdly, remembering Charu Mazumdar means strengthening the Party he founded, holding high its banner in this age of confusions. However, unlike when CM lived, at the moment we are to defend the Party not so much against attacks by the police and class enemies as against liberal-pragmatic ideological erosion from within. Today we are to expand the Party without diluting its political cohesion; we are to use the benefits of more-or-less open Party functioning while keeping our powder dry and maintaining the preparedness to go over to underground functioning at a short notice; we are to further improve the norms and institutions of democratic centralism. Politically also the Party has to retain its revolutionary character in the face of a whole set of new tasks: to carry the banner of revolutionary democracy into the parliamentary arena without falling prey to parliamentary cretinism; to build a broad left unity without compromising a bit on those basic principles which go to characterise the CPI(ML); and so on. To ensure all this we need not only a strong ideological foundation and a correct political line but also an improved Party Constitution, which we are going to adopt in the fifth Congress.

At the moment the entire Party is busy preparing the documents boldfaced above : Party members sending answers to questions on them and specially constituted CC commissions writing the first drafts to be circulated and discussed throughout the Party before finalisation in the Congress. Even as we all devote ourselves to this most crucial task in our Party life, a lean face with sunken, glowing eyes smiles in our heart of hearts and inspires us to move forward — forward beyond him into the future he dreamt of.
